ALBUQUERQUE, July 24, 2014 – The New Mexico Compass today announced the addition of Joe Cardillo as Deputy Director. In the organization’s senior communications role he will be responsible for developing strategy and partnerships, serving as a principal adviser to the co-founders and board, and working to establish an initial operating budget.

“Joe is a great fit for the Compass,” said Editor in Chief and Co-Founder Marisa Demarco. “He cares about journalism and about New Mexico. And he brings to our team the knowledge we’re missing: How to create a financial base that can sustain our mission long-term.”

Margaret Wright, managing editor and co-founder, says a major aim of the New Mexico Compass is to rethink how legacy media and news startups operate.

“Media outlets still struggle with internal and external perceptions of social media and the web as simply helpful add-ons,” said Wright. “We’re interested in figuring out how news organizations can create more active, transparent and open-source flows of communication with the public. Joe cares deeply about that mission, and he has the experience to back it up.”

Wright adds that Compass leadership is excited to see what springs from the site’s first major reporting project. “It’s an interactive database of public records surrounding fatal shootings by Albuquerque Police starting in 2010. The material includes video and audio footage, witness reports and other primary sources. Joe is responsible for getting funds through a crowdfunding platform to launch the project. He’s also developing connections with organizations and publications doing similar work. We think it’s going to be a huge step forward and a model for investigative and open-access journalism here in New Mexico.”

Cardillo joins the Compass after one-and-a-half years with venture-backed San Francisco technology startup Visually. During his time there, he worked as a cross-functional operations manager with a strong hand in product growth and marketing. Previous to his startup experience, Cardillo worked for three years within the multimedia unit of PR Newswire, helping develop and distribute content platforms.

The New Mexico Compass is a nonprofit startup dedicated to transparent, open-access journalism.

The Compass focuses on telling stories that matter to the public, in ways that matter. Combined with the educational efforts of its parent organization, the New Mexico Journalism Collaborative, the Compass strives to be a model for reporting that strengthens the community, fosters citizen journalists and contributes to a healthy journalism ecosystem.
